I still enjoy cooking and I also enjoy making large meals with a lot of guests - something I don't get to do much anymore. My only real complaint about my current kitchen is that I wish it was a bit larger (I think that's always the complaint) and had space for an island in the middle, or just a bit more counter space.

I think it's a law of nature: there is never enough counter space.

15 years ago when i remodeled the kitchen went from 7 linear ft of counter space to 36 feet of counter space. It was glorious and i desperatly wish for more today. 6 cabinets to 17 and could use twice as many.

Oh.. and of the 17 cabinates i have lost most access to the ones under the 36 ft of counter. Getting old with a back injury makes lower cabinates and the floor a) but inaccessible

It has been a decade since i hosted a party. Used to have 30 to 50 over for new years eve for maybe 15 years at this house. Started at 6 and ended 2am ish. Tons of food, home made pizza, soups galore, homemade sushi, oysters on grill, this was just what i did different years others brought stuff to. Bonfire in yard.

Since i dont drink it was always byob and dont get drunk. Sleeping bags available for those that had one to many and big breakfast for whomever was still there next morning. Lots of kid friends and family parties rotated between familys every month

Then one year we were out of town for new years and the next i was just to tired.. then to tired to host kids friends parties then to tored to attend other, been too tired for a decade now.

I miss it, but just the thought now leaves me tired. Lol

I can relate - partly. We did a lot of remodel work in our kitchen. Storage space was always an issue. But our family was small, just the four of us. Neither my wife nor I have problems washing the dishes by hand so the dishwasher was one of the first things we got rid of to create space for more pots and other kitchen items. We have a few cookbooks in the kitchen, but we have plenty of space in the rest of house for bookshelves. Still, we had a large built-in bookcase installed when we did our house addition.

Your house is very pretty and very homy. I don't know how to spell gemuchlicket or whatever that German word is but you have it. I love the corner windows in your kitchen.

Functionality is a beauty in itself.

Sigh. I wish. We are living with a 20 year old jenn air dishwasher that was crap to begin with new. Now we put it on super scrub and exta rinse with cascade, sodium percarbonate and borax all at once. Its a three hour wash cycle. If you do it just right, the stuff is cleaned. Pots and pans are hand wash.

Wash by hand is sabataged by the rest of the family. 10 year old, 14 year old, etc.. it boggles me how many utensils, cups, mugs, saucers, plates and bowls they can use in a day. then the fight to get them to help clean up, if i have the emotional and physical energy to fight that good fight.

Ok, im depressed just thinking about this. Every one but me are out of town visiting the crazy mountain grandma. Kitchin will be immaculate by time they get back and I might have a day or so of mental health space in my clean kitchen space.

Lots of Julia Child cooking shows are available on YouTube.

And one poor guy documenting himself trying to learn how to cook from her cookbooks which is sadly hilarious.
