Seeking a Cure for Writer's Block
Writers everywhere know the pain of writer's block. Staring at the blank paper has, in time, progressed to staring at a blank screen, with the horrendous addition of a blinking cursor flashing in your peripheral version like the tapping toe of an impatient secretary who just wants you to get on with it already. Sunk deep in gloom, writers stare at the page, willing their thoughts to magically appear thereupon, organized and ready for publication. Alas, for myself and colleagues, science has so far been unable to produce an effective treatment for this dread ailment that afflicts all of us at one time or another.
There have, at least, been studies done on the matter. The seminal work in 1974, published in the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, appeared as a blank sheet of paper. Now, excitingly, a multi-disciplinary replication effort has been published. You can read it here in it's entirety. (My thanks to this article for bringing them to my attention)
I'd like to say more on the matter myself, but unfortunately I feel... I feel like the words are just slipping away. Words fail me. Oh, no! I've got the Block!
