“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner.”
She scoffed, leaning into him. “Like I didn’t notice. I got the gray hairs, and yours stayed as warm as the fires in my heart. I’ll leave you, by and by, and perhaps…”
“There will be no other.” He couldn’t look her in the eye.
“I certainly hope there will be. Loneliness is no way to live.” She tipped her head back. “Kiss me, and let’s play pretend a while longer.”
“Just as long as I possibly can,” he promised, lips meeting hers.
With that, she was content.
