Two Thumbs
Typing with my thumbs tends to devolve to a thumb and forefinger. Something about that works better than both thumbs. Dexterity? Motor control? Not really sure.
Regardless, I am working on my phone and this is an interesting exercise. I could pull out my tiny Bluetooth keyboard, but I am at work and, well, trying to be discreet. When I’m in public I can do that, and have. I used to have a tiny folding keyboard that fit in a pocket. That was long enough ago it synced with my Palm Pilot! Ow, I feel old now.
I made an executive decision yesterday. I mean, it’s my company, that makes me an executive, right? Anyway, Sanderley Studios now owns a small Mac laptop, because Vellum is stupid and doesn’t have a Windows version. The price of entry is going to be very steep - well over $500 for both computer and software - but it’s hopefully going to be justified by regaining lost time formatting both ebook and print. Will report back on that next week.
Honestly it is so nice to be in a position to buy tools for the business, with business funds. Not that I’m doing great shakes with selling right now, but it’s a slow steady trickle. I’ll take that. Better than a drip, right? I think if I can perfect this hunt and peck with thumb finger phone, I may even be able to write a few hundred words a day in otherwise lost time. Anything is better than nothing.
Besides, I forgot to grab my purse on the way out of the apartment today. I blame lovely distraction. My husband brought me coffee in bed and then coaxed me out to sit in the balmy November morning on the balcony. Texas and my First Reader home again make me happy. It’s not a bad thing, by the way. I carry the essentials in my jeans pockets. But the purse has my Bluetooth headphones and my sketchbook and pens. So I can’t draw while I’m listening to a fluffy webinar. Writing while listening? Yeah, in this case I can get away with it. There are slides presenting nothing much at all, mechanisms I’m familiar with, or establishing the credentials of the speaker. I can read the slide and then safely ignore them reading it to me for the next five minutes.
It’s all good. I can entertain myself during the lulls, and I have a formula to revise and then make up in the lab. Days I can play with materials on the bench are always good days. Besides? I’ve been handed a conundrum by a client so I have that to look forward to! Have I mentioned I love my job?
Having achieved one goal - no, make that two with the release of Taskforce Chiweenie- I have another to knock out this weekend. At that point I’m out of commitments (ok, two shorts but not due until next year) so I can focus on family and holidays. And write, as I can, when I can. But no urgency.
