Why does an author have the goal to "challenge [readers] ideologically"? 🤔 How about entertaining readers instead of lecturing or hectoring them? 🤷♂️ And making sure that readers understand the nature of the viewpoint character/conflict/setting within the first chapter(s), so readers can delete that Kindle sample if they don't find it entertaining?
If I ever do write I hope not to be the bait and switch type. It's a long story but a coworker got caught in a bait and switch on a video game and he was totally invested in the character then, boom unnecessary bait and switch. He's still playing but I bet he thinks twice about that company on the next game.

I guess the moral is lead with something nice even if it has to be scenery because all your characters are vampires.
Give your reader reason to hope and he will clutch at it.
Lead with something that will attract those readers who will appreciate the rest of the story. Decoy openings are even more repulsive.
