I do the same kind of thing with woodworking. It’s a calming task that requires focus but not a lot of hard thinking.

I love it. My wife and I do all our garden in raised beds now. No more tilling the ground. We grow about sixty percent of what we consume. We have buck-bucks, too. Rosie's Raptors.

My experience in the DFW area of Texas, and here in the NV desert is that the wind is the killer. When the dry winds blow, the plants transpire moisture faster than their vascular system can replenish. Recommend windbreaks. Had I to do it, I'd have a yard-high cheesecloth and stakes windbreaks shaped like this greater than sign > every five feet down the row, or so. Staples on cheesecloth need reinforcement, but I'll bet you know all about that. ;-)

Thank you! I'm planning the garden to be in the backyard, where the big shop building and house provide some breaks, and there's a pecan tree for shade and shelter as well. I can't put it under the pecan, as it's allelopathic, but giving it some space still allows me room. I may get shadecloth as well, but I like the cheesecloth idea.

I'm hoping to at least get some herbs in. I haven't seen any rabbits at the new house, so maybe, just maybe I'll be able to keep the oregano!

And a raised bed or big pot may be the best option if there are bunnies!

-28° F. up here on top of the world today, Cedar. I'll probably plant a few seeds come June but this time of year home brewing a batch of White Nights stout or nigori sake gives me the feelings you're describing.
