So many scientists lack faith, unlike their predecessors. 😔 From my own perspective, I see despair as a sin. We may fall or fail, but it's not a forgone conclusion. Ever. And even if we fail, others may succeed from our lessons. 🤷♂️
"Given our cultural case of the blues for the last hundred years, ... I'm not sure I can blame the modern writer for being drawn into the dark dystopian world." Yep, yep, but, but, as to living in rather than writing about; I suspect many, including most readers here, can and do create at least a pied-à-terre for themselves and theirs that isn't utopia, of course, but is far, far from being dystopia. Sometimes the best we can do is keep on trucking.
As long as we keep striving for freedom I think we'll be OK as a species. There are a lot of possibilities for human existence to continue beyond our current form, Homo sapiens. I'm excited for the future, even if I do have trepidation over some of the specifics.

BTW, Calhoun didn't even bother to properly write up his mouse utopia experiments, merely publishing sensationalized accounts in the popular press.
Also, notice how no one is ever interested in what happened in Universes 1 through 24.
